That $40 'waterproof' phone pouch I bought for a beach trip? Total garbage.

I took it snorkeling in Cancun last spring and my phone was dead within 2 minutes of hitting the water. The seal just gave out and saltwater fried the charging port. Anyone else had better luck with a specific brand of dry bag for their phone?

Read that most of those pouches only work above water and the pressure from diving breaks the seal quick. I just use a ziplock bag now, double bag it, and it's never failed me.

Dude same here. I tried one of those expensive waterproof pouches once, took it snorkeling in like 15 feet of water and my phone came out damp. Switched to the double ziplock method and never looked back. I even tested it by submerging a bag with a paper towel in it for a full hour in my sink, came out bone dry. Cheap and actually works better than the stuff they sell for this.

Well, this is making me rethink everything honestly. I used to be one of those people who bought the expensive waterproof cases because I thought they were the only safe option. But hearing you and @charlescraig talk about ziplock bags actually working better under pressure, it makes a lot of sense. I mean, those pouches are probably designed for casual splashing, not real depth. The double bag trick with paper towel test is pretty convincing too. Definitely switching over next time I go to the beach.
