That one sentence about hostel breakfasts at 7am in Prague got me thinking

I overheard a guy in line at a hostel in Prague saying he never pays for the breakfast add-on because he just eats the free bread and jam twice. Made me realize I've wasted maybe $80 over my last 4 trips buying those buffet deals when I could hit a local bakery for 2 euros instead. Anyone else skip the hostel breakfast and find better cheap food nearby, or is that too much hassle for you?

Honestly I used to always grab those breakfast deals without even thinking about it, figured it was just part of the hostel thing. But last year in Lisbon I skipped it one morning because I was running late and found this little pastelaria around the corner, got a coffee and a fresh pastel de nata for like 3 euros and it blew the hostel spread out of the water. Now I look at the price of the add-on and just can't bring myself to pay it, especially when most places have a bakery or a corner store within five minutes. I mean sure, the convenience is nice when you're half asleep and just want to grab something fast, but the quality difference is so huge that it's worth the tiny bit of extra effort. Maybe it's just me but I've saved enough on my last two trips to cover an extra night somewhere, which feels way better than a lukewarm scrambled egg.
