TIL that my aversion to shared rooms faded after a few trips.
Hostels are key for cheap travel and great stories.

Hostel dorms can be wild. Once in Bangkok, a guy from Norway taught us how to make proper coffee at 3 AM. We used a sock as a filter since the kitchen had nothing. Ended up talking until sunrise about northern lights and street food. Those random moments stick with you more than any private room ever could.

Hostels quickly break down any fear of shared rooms through sheer exposure. Karen_sanchez49's sock filter story is exactly the kind of strange memory that makes dorms worth it. Just pack earplugs and go with the flow for a couple nights to see the appeal.

Agreed, those weird hostel moments are the best. I remember in Lisbon, we used a plastic bag to make popcorn after hours. Laughed so hard we woke up half the dorm.

That sock coffee story is classic hostel logic. You end up doing weird stuff with strangers and it just makes sense at the time. Those moments are why paying for privacy feels like a waste sometimes. Sure, you might get a snorer, but you also get a story about northern lights at 3 AM. It balances out.
