Tried hostels in Lisbon last spring and honestly, the private Airbnb was cheaper
Everyone online keeps saying hostels are the way to go for solo budget travel, but I had the opposite experience. I booked 4 nights in a popular Lisbon hostel for $45 a night, but after adding in locker fees, breakfast, and laundry, I spent $210 total. Meanwhile my buddy got a tiny Airbnb studio near Alfama for $38 a night with free wifi and a mini kitchen. I ended up spending more on eating out since I couldn't cook, and the dorm noise made me sleep like garbage. Has anyone else found that private rentals beat hostels in certain cities?

Nah, hostels are way better for meeting people though.

Definitely true, but what about mixed dorms vs female-only? I always have way better luck meeting people in the mixed ones, but some of my friends swear by female-only for feeling safer.
