Tried hostels vs. Couchsurfing in Barcelona last month and one was way better

I did a week in Barcelona and split it between a hostel near Las Ramblas and three Couchsurfing stays. The hostel cost me 35 euro a night for a bunk bed with no locker that fit my bag. Couchsurfing was free and I got to eat homemade paella with a local family on the second night. The hostels had AC and predictable wifi though, so it's a tradeoff. Has anyone else had a Couchsurfing host that was a total creep or just me?

Did you check if the hostel had a luggage storage room instead?

My host's dog ate my passport. Took three days to get a new one.

Oh man that passport thing is rough. I had my backpack stolen in Barcelona once with my passport inside, spent like four days running around to the embassy. What worked for me was showing up super early, like before they even opened, cause the line gets insane later. Also I printed out a copy of my flight itinerary and a booking confirmation for the hostel, just to prove I was a traveler and not some random person off the street. The embassy people were actually pretty cool once I had all that stuff ready. Good call on getting it done in just three days though, that's actually pretty fast considering how bureaucratic those places can be.
