Why does nobody talk about free walking tours in smaller cities

I was in Valencia last month and overheard a couple at my hostel talking about how they did a free walking tour and saved like 40 euros on a guided bus tour. I always thought those tours were just a big city thing (you know, like in London or Paris). But I looked one up in Valencia and it was totally worth it - our guide showed us this tiny market stall that sold the best jamon for 3 euros a portion. The whole tour was 2 hours and I only tipped 5 euros. Has anyone else tried free walking tours in mid-size towns and found hidden gems?

Free walking tours in smaller cities are seriously underrated. I did one in Grenoble a few years back and the guide took us to this random alleyway bakery that had the best croissants I've ever had. You just don't get that kind of local knowledge from a bus tour. Plus the guides are usually locals who actually love their city and want to show it off. The tip is totally worth it for the hidden spots they point out.

Totally agree with this. Did one in a random small town in Portugal last year and the guide took us to this tiny cafe where his grandma used to work. Best pasteis de nata Ive ever had and it was like $2 for a coffee and a pastry. Plus he pointed out which tiles on the buildings were actually original and which were fake tourist stuff. Wouldve never known that on my own. The bus tours just skip all that gritty local stuff.
