Back in 2019, I would have just ordered takeout without thinking twice

This Tuesday, my car needed new tires, which was a $600 hit I didn't plan for. Instead of panicking, I looked at my budget and saw I had $80 left for food this week. I cooked every meal from scratch, even making a big pot of chili that lasted three days. Has anyone else had a big expense pop up and still made their food budget work?

I used to see a tight budget as a punishment. Getting creative in the kitchen actually made me feel more in control, not less. It's a different kind of win.

My budget forced me to learn what a lentil is.

That line about your budget forcing you to learn what a lentil is, @tara642, is so real. I remember being in that exact spot a few years back. It's a tough lesson but honestly, lentils are a lifesaver once you figure them out. They're cheap, they fill you up, and you can make a lot of different things with them. It gets easier, but I know that first step of figuring it out feels rough.
