Got hit with a $400 car repair in Tacoma and it made me finally build a real emergency fund
I was driving home from a buddy's place in Tacoma last month when my alternator died, and the shop quoted me $400 I did not have set aside. I ended up putting it on a credit card and paying it off over 3 months, which felt dumb because I make okay money and just never planned for stuff like this. Has anyone else had a surprise bill push them to finally start an emergency fund, and how much do you try to keep in it?
Oh man the alternator betrayal. Mine was a water heater that flooded my closet, so basically we're the same person with different bad luck. I keep about 3 months of bills in a savings account now, mostly so I never have to do the credit card shuffle again.
