My freezer quit on a Tuesday, the repair quote was insane
Opened the freezer last Tuesday to grab chicken for dinner, and everything was soft. The compressor had finally given out after 12 years. Got a quote for $450 to fix it, but a new basic model was only $380 at the local appliance outlet on 8th street. I bought the new one and paid $40 for delivery and haul-away. Has anyone else found that repair costs sometimes beat the value of an old unit?

Wait, is this really some kind of new problem people are only just figuring out? I mean, yeah, $450 to fix a 12 year old freezer sounds like a lot, but you also gotta think about what you're actually getting for that money. A repair might give you another few years, sure, but a new one with a warranty and better energy rating? That's not nothing either. I guess my thing is, people always act shocked when the math works out to just replace it, but that's been the case for a while now with appliances. The real scam is that they don't even make them like they used to, so even if you fix it, the next part that breaks is probably right around the corner anyway. You made the right call, and honestly, I'd probably do the same thing, but I'm not gonna pretend it's some big injustice when the numbers were right there in front of you.
