My grocery budget win turned into a weird scavenger hunt

I was determined to only spend $40 on food this week, so I planned meals around what was already in my pantry. I found a can of beans from 2021 and some freezer-burned veggies, which became a surprisingly okay soup. The real win was using a forgotten $5 gift card from a gas station to buy milk, making my total $38.75. It felt like a game finding uses for old stuff, and my fridge is way less cluttered now. Has anyone else had a week where using up random food actually saved a lot of money?

Remembered my grandma's pantry had a jar of pickles from like 2018. I opened it on a dare, and they were weirdly still good, crisp even. That got me on a kick of eating all the weird condiments in the door of my fridge. Made a sandwich with spicy brown mustard, some sweet chili sauce, and the last of a dried-out block of cheddar. It was a mess, but it tasted fine and cleared out so much space. Felt like I was on one of those cooking shows where they have to use mystery ingredients.

weirdly still good" is a gamble i'm never taking with 2018 pickles.

Pickles are basically immortal (in vinegar anyway).
