The day I realized my grocery budget was off by 80 bucks a month

I was staring at my bank statement last Tuesday and noticed I was spending like 120 a week on food for just me. Then I looked at the receipts and saw I was buying pre-cut veggies and bagged salads every time. I started buying whole heads of lettuce and chopping stuff myself, and that alone drops my weekly total to about 40. Has anyone else found a specific store brand or produce section hack that saved them more than they expected?

Wait, you were spending 120 a week on just yourself? That's wild. I mean I guess if you're buying all that pre-cut stuff it adds up fast, but 120 for one person is like a whole other grocery bill.

Oh come on, 120 a week for one person is not that wild. If you're not eating like a broke college kid on ramen and actually want decent food it adds up fast. A pound of decent ground beef is 6 or 7 bucks now, a box of cereal is pushing 5, a gallon of milk is over 4. Do a normal week's worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner and you're there easy. I could hit 120 just on steak and beer if I wanted to.

My grocery bill was sitting right at 400 a month for one person before I figured out the same thing. I was buying those bags of pre-shredded cheese and those little plastic boxes of spinach all the time. It took me actually writing down what I bought for two weeks to see where the money was going. Now I buy block cheese and shred it myself, and I get whole bunches of greens instead of the bags. That hack alone saved me about 30 bucks a month.
