Thought the envelope system was for my grandma, then I tried it for 3 weeks
My coworker Dana kept bugging me about pulling cash out for groceries instead of swiping my card, and I honestly thought it was pointless in 2024. Three weeks in with $80 a week in an envelope, I've somehow got $140 left over that would've vanished into little $6 snack runs. The weird part is seeing the cash thin out makes me actually think about whether I need the thing. Still keeping my bills on autopay though, I'm not a caveman. Anyone else mix cash for the fun stuff with cards for the fixed stuff?
Tried the cash thing after my girlfriend dared me and I walked around for two weeks feeling like a drug dealer with a wad of ones in my sock drawer. The dumbest part was realizing I'd been dropping $9 on coffee and a muffin every single morning without blinking, but handing over a ten and getting one lonely dollar back stung way more. Cash makes you feel the loss in a way a card never will. I still keep rent and utilities on autopay because missing those would be a real problem. The fun money is all cash now though. Call me old fashioned, it just works.
