Update: I gave up my gym membership to save $60 a month and it backfired

I canceled my Planet Fitness pass in January thinking I'd just run outside and use free workout videos, but I ended up buying a bunch of cheap home gear that totaled over $200. Now I see that fixed monthly cost was actually keeping my spending in check. Has anyone else had a budget cut spiral into a bigger purchase?
