Update: That curb alert tradition on my block finally clicked for me...
I always thought the pile of stuff people left out on bulk trash day was just junk... but last month I saw a neighbor put out a perfectly good bike rack. On a whim, I grabbed it and saved myself $40. Now I make a point to check the pile every week, and I've scored a lamp, some pots for my plants, and even a working coffee maker. It's like a free treasure hunt right outside my door. My monthly 'household items' budget line has dropped to almost zero because of this. I realize we're all just recycling things within the community instead of buying new. It's nice to save money and keep stuff out of the landfill... a total win for my wallet and the planet.

My neighbor put out a flat screen TV last week that just needed a new power cord. I fixed it for ten bucks and now I'm watching free cable like a king. It's insane what people consider trash these days. I'm half expecting to find a working car next bulk day.

Guess that freecycle trend @nancyn69 mentioned is just rich people giving me their stuff.

Read an article about this freecycle trend picking up. Cool to see it actually working out for people like you.
