I finally drew the line on using particle board for built-ins

A builder I work with always specs particle board for the interiors to cut costs, and for years I went along with it. Last month, he wanted it for a whole wall unit in a humid basement, and I just couldn't do it. That stuff swells like crazy with any moisture, and it feels cheap. I told him I'd only use plywood, even if it meant losing the job. He grumbled but agreed, and now the client has something that will last. It's a small stand, but using bad materials for a quick buck eats at you. Maybe I'm too stubborn, but my name is on the work.

Good on you for sticking to your guns. That builder sounds like he's cutting corners way too hard, especially in a basement. @jake250 is right, water just wrecks cheap stuff. You're gonna sleep way better knowing your name is on something that won't fall apart in a year.

Ever notice how water damages almost everything made on the cheap?

Particle board gets a bad rap but it's fine if you keep it dry, @christopher_torres66. Just depends how it's used and where you put it.
