Rant: I tried a 1/4 inch roundover bit on some oak edging and it completely tore out the grain instead of giving a smooth finish.

I was aiming for a soft edge on a built-in bookcase, but the tear-out was so bad I had to recut the piece, so now I'm debating if I should have used a router table instead of my trim router or just stuck with a simple chamfer.

What feed rate were you running? If you go too slow with a router, it can just chew up the grain instead of cutting it. Also, was the bit brand new or kinda dull? A worn bit on hard oak is a recipe for that exact mess.

Oak is brutal for that, same thing happened to me.

My buddy's router table saved his oak project.

Saved" seems like a strong word for a router table.
