Showerthought: I used to eyeball every cabinet door gap at 1/8 inch, now I keep a $3 feeler gauge in my apron
For years I just squinted at the reveal and called it good, until a client in Portland sent back photos of her upper doors looking uneven. I bought a cheap set of feeler gauges at Harbor Freight and started checking every gap at 3/32 inch before I drill for hinges. Takes maybe 30 extra seconds per door but I have not had a callback since last spring. Curious if anyone else has a small tool like that they swear by for consistency.
Noticed the same thing with cooking years back, where I used to dump spices in by feel until I started actually leveling my measuring spoons and my chili stopped tasting different every single time. Same deal with hanging pictures, I used to hold the frame up and guess, now I mark the spot with a pencil and check it with a little torpedo level my wife got me for five bucks. Turns out most of the mess in my life came from trusting my eyes when they were tired or in a hurry. A cheap tool that takes the guesswork out is worth way more than what you pay for it.
