Talked to an old timer at a trade show in Charlotte who said I was overplanning my dovetails

He showed me how he cuts them freehand with just a marking gauge and a sharp chisel, no layout lines or jigs at all, and it came out cleaner than my carefully marked ones. Has anyone else gone back to simpler methods after overcomplicating things for years?

Ditch the layout lines and just let your chisel follow the scribe.

Wait, isn't that just more stressful to not mark anything?

You ever read that article in Fine Woodworking a few years back, or was it a blog post somewhere? It was all about how our grandpas used way less tools and still made stuff that lasted. That stuck with me. There's something freeing about ditching all the clamps and jigs and just letting your hands do the work (even if mine don't look as pretty as his yet). I guess all those years of overplanning just made me scared to mess up, you know?
