The old carpenter who taught me to never force a mortise chisel with my palm

I met this guy at a cabinet shop in Akron about 5 years ago who stopped mid-cut and said 'if your chisel won't go, your sharpening is wrong' and it took me three ruined chisels and two stitches before I finally got what he meant, has anyone else had a mentor just drop a line that took years to click?

Three chisels and a trip to urgent care is a rough way to learn that lesson.
