Told my apprentice to stop sanding with the grain on end-grain pieces

Spent two years leaving scratches on every butcher block end-grain glue-up before a retired cabinetmaker in Santa Fe finally showed me I had to use a random orbit sander instead of the belt sander I was using.

Funny, I actually prefer the scratches. Gives it that handcrafted look, like someone actually made it instead of a machine. Sanding with the grain on end grain just adds character, you know?

end grain just adds character" - reminds me of this one time I was building a cutting board for my buddy and forgot to sand it at all past 60 grit. He said it looked "rustic" and uses it every day. I think we overthink this stuff sometimes.

Wait wait, you actually don't sand end grain at all?
