Tried a used drum sander from a shop in Spokane
Picked up a used drum sander from a closed shop in Spokane for $400. Looked fine but the drum was way out of true. First pass on some maple plywood left a wavy mess. Sanded through the veneer on one corner. Took me two hours to figure out the drum needed rebalancing. Spent another $60 on new abrasive strips and balancing kit. Now it runs smooth but taught me to check used gear more carefully. Anyone else got burned by a shop closing sale?

Honestly, @wilson.joseph nailed it, nothing says "bargain" like paying $400 for a glorified boat anchor that sanded your plywood into a topographical map.

Did you actually check the drum with a straightedge before you bought it or did you just roll your eyes and slap down your cash? Sounds like you learned a 400 dollar lesson in being too trusting, but calling it a "wavy mess" and a "headache" is a bit dramatic. You fixed it for 60 bucks and some elbow grease, so really you came out with a working sander for 460 total. That's still a decent deal for a closed shop liquidation. People act like one bad day in the shop is a tragedy.
