Unpopular opinion: pocket screws are ruining beginner cabinetmakers

I had a week last March that was the worst in 10 years. Three different clients brought me cabinets that looked fine from the outside but were held together with nothing but pocket screws for the face frames. Two of them had joints already pulling apart, just from normal kitchen use. The third one was only 6 months old and the whole thing wobbled like a card table. On the flip side, I spent the next week building a set of cabinets for a lady in Denver who wanted everything traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Took me twice as long but the frames are rock solid and I know they'll outlast me. Pocket screws have their place for quick work or hidden panels, but I see too many people treating them like a shortcut for everything. Do you think we've gotten too comfortable using them for structural joints?

That Denver lady's cabinets probably still had pocket screws in the back panels though.

Honestly, yeah, it's part of a bigger thing I see everywhere. People grab the easiest tool or method because it's fast and cheap upfront, then get mad when it doesn't hold up. It's like buying a cheap mattress or a flimsy phone case - it works for a minute, then you're stuck replacing it. With cabinets, those pocket screw face frames are fine for a rental flip or a weekend project, but calling it "fine woodworking" is a stretch. I just wish more beginners slowed down and learned the basics first, even if it's just half-lap joints with glue and clamps. It saves everyone headaches down the road.

Nah, pocket screws work fine if you use enough glue and don't overload the joints.
