My old boss in Bakersfield swore by a $12 crimper and I laughed at him for two whole seasons
Back around 2019 I was running drops for a crew out in Bakersfield and this old timer named Ray kept telling me to ditch my fancy ratcheting crimper and just carry a cheap one. I blew him off for about 18 months because I thought he was just stuck in his ways. Then my good tool jammed on a 40 foot run in a hot attic in July and I had to finish the job with the spare he tossed in my bag. That little thing did 60 terminations without a single bad fit, and I ended up buying four more for the truck. Ray moved to Idaho and I never got to tell him he was right. Any of you still running the cheap crimpers on purpose, or did you all go ratcheting once and never look back?
Reading this I keep thinking about how often the cheap old tool outlasts the shiny new one, same way a hand written list beats an app for groceries. We get so sure the upgrade is progress that we forget the basic version already did the job fine.
