Overheard a homeowner say "my last installer left fingerprints on every trim ring" and it made me rethink my whole approach

I was coiling up some RG6 on a job in Arlington last Thursday and the customer was on the phone complaining about the guy before me. Nothing about bad signal or loose fittings, just that he left smudges everywhere. Made me realize how much of our work is about the little details people actually SEE. Started carrying a microfiber cloth in my pouch and wiping down every wall plate and trim ring before I leave. Anyone else have that one tiny thing that seems to impress customers more than the actual install?

Stop wasting your time with that nonsense. I've been doing this for 12 years and I've never once had a customer complain about a fingerprint. They care about the signal quality and whether the wires are hidden. If you're spending extra time wiping down trim rings you're just cutting into your own profit margin. Most homeowners don't even notice that stuff until you point it out to them. And even then, they forget about it the second they watch their first game in 4K without any static. Focus on the actual technical work that keeps your customers coming back and recommending you instead of turning into a maid service for wall plates.

Nah, rowan's got a point. You're charging by the job, not the hour.
