Rant: My lead tech told me to ditch the crimp tool and go all compression, now I'm torn
He said he's seen fewer callbacks in 6 months since switching, and honestly I hate admitting he might be onto something because crimps are faster. But compression fittings cost about a dollar more each, and on a 200 unit job that adds up quick. Anybody here made the switch full time or still riding with crimps?
Two years ago I would've called your lead tech crazy. I was all about crimps, had the ratchet tool in my pouch for a decade and could knock one out in like 15 seconds flat. Then I did a 40 unit apartment reno where we had callbacks on 6 different crimp fittings leaking behind drywall, and that was it for me. The thing nobody tells you is the callback cost blows past that dollar a unit real fast once you're cutting open walls. Now I figure the extra buck is cheap insurance, plus compression is way more forgiving if your cut isn't perfect. Still keep the crimper around for tight spots where I can't get two hands on the nut though.
