TIL those giant spools at the warehouse are actually a bad idea for us

Went to the main supply depot in Portland last Tuesday. Saw a guy hauling out a full 1000ft spool of RG6. Thought that looked efficient. Then my van got stuck in the mud trying to leave the site. Those things weigh a ton. I'll stick to 500ft boxes from now on. Anyone else have trouble with the big spools on job sites?

Yeah, I feel you on that one. I mean, those big spools look great until you actually have to move them anywhere. I tried using one on a job last year and it was a total pain, couldn't even get it through a standard doorway without a dolly and a prayer. It's like they're designed for a warehouse not a real job site. Idk, maybe it's just me but I'll take the smaller boxes any day, even if it means more trips to the truck.

The 14-2 spools from Westinghouse are the WORST for this. I bought one thinking it would save time on a big remodel and i spent more time wrestling the thing around corners than i did pulling wire. My tip is to keep a couple of those plastic wire spool holders in your truck and just break the big spools down onto those before you even start the job. It takes like ten minutes but saves your back all day. Also if you do have to carry a full spool through a house, roll it on its edge like a wheel instead of trying to lift it. That trick got me through a narrow hallway once without taking out the drywall.
