Dropped the heat gun for a hair dryer on a 1970s zoom ring and it saved me
I used to hit every stiff zoom ring with my heat gun on high, and last month I warped the plastic collar on a customer's old 35-105 because of it. Now I run a cheap hair dryer on low for about 4 minutes, working the ring back and forth the whole time, and the old grease lets go without any damage. The heat gun goes from 0 to 400 degrees in seconds, which is way too fast for thin plastic. The hair dryer warms slow and even, and my hands can stay right there feeling for soft spots. Two lenses done this way so far, both smooth, zero marks. Has anyone else given up the heat gun for jobs like this, or am I just late to the party?
