Had a 20 minute chat with a retired Leica tech and it blew my mind

Ran into some old guy at a garage sale who used to calibrate Leica rangefinders back in the 70s. He told me he never used a collimator, just his eyeballs and a piece of ground glass. Anyone else ever meet someone who worked that way?

Ground glass and eyeballs, that's how the old masters really did it (and honestly still works fine).

Yeah I watched a guy do that once and he dropped the camera.

My buddy Tim tried that method with a 4x5 camera last year, @violar35, and ended up with a focusing cloth covered in fingerprints and a lot of swearing. The ground glass still works perfectly fine though.
