Had a Minolta X-700 come in with the classic capacitor whine... tried the 'oven trick' as a last resort and it actually worked.

Nice! I had the same issue with my X-700 last year. I used a heat gun on the circuit board for about thirty seconds, focusing on the capacitor area. The whine stopped completely and the camera has been perfect ever since. It's a great fix when you don't want to do a full recap right away.

Thirty seconds with a heat gun on a circuit board" is what got me. That sounds like a recipe for melting something or making the problem way worse. I've watched enough repair videos to know that heat guns are for stripping paint or shrinking tubing, not for zapping camera electronics. I'd be too scared to try that, even if it did fix the whine.
