Had to choose between a helicoil and a timesert for a stripped M42 mount
Got a Pentax Spotmatic in last week with a stripped tripod mount hole. I went with the timesert since the helicoils I've used before seemed to back out over time. It held up fine during testing, but has anyone else noticed timeserts being harder to install straight?

Yeah @robins83 that 5 degree lean is basically tradition at this point, I've just accepted it.

Oh man tell me about it, I swear my timesert ended up with a 5 degree lean that I just pretended wasn't there. At least it's tighter than my last helicoil that basically spun itself out after one good bump.

That's exactly the kind of thing that makes me think we've all just accepted half-baked fixes as normal these days. It's like with anything you buy now, you're always waiting for it to give out on you. You pay for something that's supposed to be solid and it's got a five degree lean from the factory, or the plastic clip snaps the first time you look at it sideways. Nobody makes stuff that just works without some kind of fudge factor anymore. It's like we're all just winging it with that "good enough" attitude and calling it a win.
