I finally picked replacing the whole shutter unit over just swapping the broken blades, and I'm glad I did
A guy brought in a Nikon F3 last Tuesday with one bent shutter blade, and I sat there for 20 minutes debating whether to just bend it back or pull the whole unit. I went with the full swap at $180 in parts, and when I got the old unit out I could see three other blades were about to fail too. Anyone else run into a job where the cheap fix would have come back to bite you in a month?
Smart call. I've pulled shutter units where the one bad blade was just the first to go, the rest were worn thin at the pivots and would've started hanging up within weeks. Doing it right the first time saves you the headache of the same camera coming back and a customer who's now mad about paying twice.
