I finally realized my lens cleaning method was making things worse

For years I used a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner spray on every lens that came in, thinking I was being thorough. Last month a regular brought in his Leica Summicron with haze I just couldn't clear, even after three tries. He mentioned his buddy, a museum archivist, only uses a rocket blower and a specific brush first. Tried it, and the haze was just loose dust I was grinding in with the cloth. How many other lenses have I accidentally micro-scratched? What's your go-to first step for cleaning before any liquid touches the glass?

Honestly that method seems like overkill for everyday stuff. A clean microfiber cloth has always worked fine for me, never had a scratch. What kind of cleaner spray were you using?

Totally get where you're coming from.

Is it really that big a deal though?

Why do we overthink the simplest things sometimes?
