Just read that the first Kodak Brownie camera only cost $1 in 1900

I saw that in an old magazine at a flea market. It really hit me how much simpler the gear was back then, even if the repairs were probably just as fiddly. Does anyone still work on those old box cameras, or are they mostly just for show now?

Ever find a local historical society or museum? The one near me has a volunteer who fixes old cameras as a hobby, he got my 1920s Brownie working again for like twenty bucks. Those old repair manuals are gold if you can track them down, I found a pdf scan after some deep digging. Honestly half the battle is just finding the right person who still has the tools and knows the tricks.

My grandpa had a whole shelf of them. I found a local camera club with an old timer who showed me how to clean the shutter and fix the bellows. It's not too hard once you get the hang of it, just takes patience. Have you tried looking for a repair guide online?

Totally agree, sage308 had the right idea with finding those old repair guys.
