My old brass burnisher finally gave up after 12 years

It was the one I inherited from my old boss in Chicago, and it just snapped clean in half last week while I was polishing a shutter blade. I ordered a new steel one online, but the feel is totally different, more aggressive on the edge. Has anyone else had trouble switching after using the same burnishing tool for that long?

Have you tried easing the new steel one down with a lighter touch... I had the same jump when I switched and it took about a week before the edge stopped feeling like it was biting too hard.

Is the new one leaving those faint score marks on the metal? I went through the same thing when my old burnisher died. What worked for me was changing the angle, holding it a few degrees flatter than I did with the brass one. Also I started doing two light passes instead of one firm one. The steel bites harder so you gotta let it do less work. Took me maybe ten days before my hand stopped overcorrecting.
