Rant: Shutter curtain fell apart on a client's Leica in Portland

Was replacing light seals on an M3, screwing the baseplate back on when the shutter curtain just crinkled. Fabric split right at the take-up spool, no warning. Client was standing there watching, quoted them $120 for the seal job, now it's a $400 rebuild. Anyone else had old curtains fail just from touching them?

Is it just me or does everything old seem to reach that exact breaking point the second you touch it, like the universe waits for the worst possible moment?
