Spent $95 on a 'repair kit' for a Canon AE-1 and only used one tiny spring
Two years back I bought one of those all in one seal and spring kits online for $95 to fix a light leak on a Canon AE-1. Turns out the only thing I actually needed was a single 3mm foam strip, and the rest of the kit is still sitting in a drawer in my garage in Mesa. I could have cut that strip myself from a $4 sheet of craft foam at any hobby store. The light leak was coming from the hinge seal the whole time and the fancy kit didn't even label which strip went where. What do you all use for foam stock, do you buy sheets or just cut from scraps?
Small thing, but the AE-1 light seals aren't craft foam, they're closed cell foam that won't soak up water or turn gummy over time. Craft foam is open cell and it'll break down and get sticky in a year or two. Buy a sheet of closed cell foam from a camera supply place or a craft store that sells it by the sheet, and cut your own strips.
