Stopped by an estate sale in Mesa and found 60 years of camera repair stashed in a garage
I walked into this estate sale in Mesa on Saturday and the whole back half of the garage was a dead man's camera shop. There were coffee cans full of loose screws sorted by thread pitch, a wall of ground glass, and maybe 200 junk bodies stacked like firewood. The guy's daughter said he ran a repair bench downtown from 1958 until he passed. I bought a box of odd spanner drivers for $12 and half of them are sizes I have never seen anywhere. What is the strangest place you have dug up old repair stock?
Estate sales are basically the last stop for tools that nobody makes anymore, and that's what makes them worth digging through. What most people miss is that old repair shops were also metal shops, so check the lathe and mill area for custom jigs and fixtures the guy made himself. That stuff never shows up at swap meets because it looks like scrap, but it's often the most useful thing in the pile.
