The difference manual aperture rings made to my repair workflow
I spent years fixing old screw-mount lenses where the aperture ring is directly coupled to the blades, no levers or springs in between. Last month I tried adjusting a modern electronic aperture assembly on a Canon EF lens and holy cow, it took me three tries just to get the ribbon cable seated right. Has anyone else found that older mechanical designs are actually faster to work on despite being more fiddly?

I used to totally be in the "modern is better" camp for repairs. But then I spent an afternoon trying to get the focus motor contacts lined up on a Sony E-mount lens and ended up snapping a tiny flex cable. I grabbed an old Pentax Takumar from the shelf, had the aperture ring off and the blades cleaned in about fifteen minutes. Yeah, the old stuff has more tiny screws and shims, but at least you can see what's actually happening instead of fighting circuit boards and ribbon cables.

Oh man, this hits so hard. I had a similar moment with an old Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 from the 70s. Spent a whole weekend trying to fix a sticky aperture on a modern Sigma zoom and ended up bending a pin on the circuit board that controls the autofocus. Just tossed it in the closet out of frustration. Then I grabbed that old Nikkor, had it fully disassembled on my desk in ten minutes, cleaned the blades with lighter fluid, and had it back together shooting perfectly in under an hour. No ribbon cables to break, no tiny ribbon connectors to snap off. You can actually see the mechanism working, you know? It's like the difference between fixing a bicycle and trying to repair a smartphone. The old glass is so much more forgiving when you're learning too. I'm at the point now where I'd rather buy a beat up vintage lens and service it myself than mess with another modern lens that requires a factory repair for the simplest issue.
