TIL I chose a junker over a pristine body to save my back on a Leica IIIf
I had a client's Leica IIIf come in for a shutter curtain replacement. I could pick between a donor camera with a wrecked exterior but good curtains, or a clean body that cost 60 bucks more. I went with the junker because it was half the price and I figured I could just swap the whole curtain assembly. Turned out the junker's curtain was actually in better shape than the client's original, and the whole job took me less than an hour. Has anyone else found that ugly donor cameras can be hidden goldmines for parts?

Yep. Beat up bodies usually mean better glass. People neglect the outside but baby the lens.

I stripped a junker Rolleiflex once for its taking lens. Looked absolutely terrible on the outside. Scratched up, cruddy leatherette. But the glass was immaculate. Better than the clean body I had sitting there. Those ugly beaters often got better storage treatment somehow. Just got left in a case with a lens cap on.
