Vent: An old-timer at a swap meet told me I was killing shutters with my cleaning method
He watched me dunk a shutter blade in naphtha and said 'you're etching the lubrication seats, kid,' so I switched to ultrasonic cleaning with a specific 3% solution and my CLA failure rate dropped from about 1 in 4 to maybe 1 in 12 - has anyone else had a repair guru totally change their process with one comment?

Doubt that old timer was ever right about much.

Is it really that deep though? Like, some old guy gave you a tip, it worked or it didn't, big deal. People act like you committed a crime if you don't follow every bit of advice from some random guy in a booth. I've gotten bad advice from young guys, old guys, everybody in between. At the end of the day, you try stuff and see what happens, no need to make a whole thing out of it.

Yeah but... how do you even know he was right though? I mean you switched methods and your failure rate dropped but correlation isn't causation. Maybe you just got better at the process over time. Those old guys at swap meets love to sound like they know everything. I've had dudes tell me I was ruining lenses by using a certain type of blower because it had some chemical in the rubber... still using that same blower ten years later and all my lenses work fine.
