A buddy told me my tent was set up wrong for years and he was right

We were camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains and he pointed out I never pulled the rainfly taut enough. He said, 'If it's flapping, it's not working,' and showed me how to really crank the tensioners. I tried it that night and the wind noise dropped by half. Anyone else have a simple tip that fixed a gear habit?

My rainfly works fine loose, it just flaps a little.

Yeah, that flapping drives me nuts too.

Lol, that flapping is literally the sound of it not working right. A loose fly lets wind get under it and buffet the tent body, which is super annoying. Tightening it up makes everything quieter and more stable.

...and honestly betty_wells I think the flapping is worse than people realize because it's not just the noise. When that fly is loose it can actually rub against the tent fabric all night and wear little holes in it over time especially if there's any dirt or sand stuck in between. I've had a couple tents get pin holes in the mesh that way from the constant buffeting. Plus when it's tight the rain sheds way better because water doesn't pool up on loose fabric. So yeah tight fly every time for me.
