A sore back changed my mind on camp chairs
I used to think packing a chair was pointless extra weight. Then my back gave out after a long trail day. Sitting on the ground felt awful. A buddy let me use his fold-up seat and it was a relief. I guess some luxuries are worth the space.

Ugh, but then you're just hauling more stuff! Real backpackers tough it out and go ultralight.

Absolutely. This ultralight pressure gets ridiculous. Who needs that stress on the trail? A couple extra pounds for dry socks or a real meal is worth it. I've watched people cut every ounce and still not enjoy themselves. Bring what makes your trip better, not just lighter. Your hike, your rules.

Seriously? Who made you the boss of what a real backpacker is? Sounds like you care more about the weight on your back than the smile on your face. What exactly are you trying to prove by being miserable with less stuff? Have you ever actually enjoyed a hike, or just endured it to fit this tough guy view?

My old Boy Scout leader called it "the comfort to weight ratio." He carried a full size pillow on every trip, said the extra pound was worth eight hours of good sleep. That stuck with me. I'll cut weight on my stove or water filter, but I always pack my tiny foam sit pad. It weighs nothing and keeps my butt dry and off the cold ground. Where do you draw your own line for a little comfort?
