Guy at a campsite in Flagstaff showed me the $3 stove hack that fixed my cold mornings
Two weeks ago I was camping near Flagstaff and my old backpacking stove kept flaming out in the wind every single time I tried to boil water. The guy at the site next to me watched me struggle for about 20 minutes, then walked over and pulled a strip of heavy foil out of his pocket. He wrapped it around the burner as a wind screen and said "three bucks at any hardware store, works better than the $40 ones they sell." I tested it the next morning in 15 mph gusts and my water hit a rolling boil in 4 minutes flat. Now I keep a folded piece in my cook kit and it weighs almost nothing. Has anyone else rigged up a cheap fix like this that beat the store-bought version?
