Is there a real difference between a $50 sleeping bag and a $250 one for occasional camping?

Last summer I was at a campsite near Lake Placid and this guy next to me was using a fancy down bag he paid like $200 for. I had a basic synthetic one I got for $45 on sale. He kept going on about how his bag packed smaller and kept him warmer at 40 degrees. But I slept fine too and mine didn't cost me a week's pay. My question is for people who do a few trips a year like me is the extra cost actually worth it or are we just paying for brand names and lighter weight we don't really need? What's your experience been with different price ranges for sleeping bags?

Same pattern as anything else with outdoor gear - people pay a premium for marginal gains that only matter if you're doing hardcore stuff. For a few trips a year, a $50 bag does the job fine and you're just paying for bragging rights otherwise.

Yeah the "kept him warmer" part is funny to me. I had a buddy who swore by his expensive down bag until he got it wet on a trip near the Delaware Water Gap and basically spent the night shivering in a wet sock. My cheap synthetic one got damp too but it still trapped some heat. I think people overhype the warmth thing for casual use. If you're not hiking miles into the backcountry the weight and pack size dont matter that much. I'd rather spend the extra cash on a good camp chair or food lol.
