My $180 sleeping pad got a pinhole leak on night one at Mount Hood and I spent 2 hours blowing it up by mouth
So I finally pulled the trigger on a nicer sleeping pad last month, the kind with the fancy baffles and the R value of like 4.5, cost me $180 at the REI in Portland. Took it out to Mount Hood two weekends ago for a quick overnighter and by 11pm I'm basically sleeping on the ground because it's gone completely flat. I'm laying there in the dark feeling around the whole thing and sure enough there's this tiny pinhole right near the valve, probably from a stray pine needle in my tent. I didn't bring a patch kit because who brings a patch kit for a brand new pad, right? Ended up blowing it back up by mouth like four different times during the night and each time it would only hold air for maybe 20 minutes. My buddy in the next tent was snoring away while I'm basically doing cardio at 2am. Got home the next day and ordered a $12 patch kit off Amazon and it fixed it in about 5 minutes. So now I'm out $180 for the pad plus $12 for the kit I should have just bought in the first place. Has anyone else had a pad puncture on the very first trip or is it just my bad luck?
Same thing happened to me on a trip to the Wallowas, pinhole right by the valve from who knows what. Now I always blow a little air in the pad at home before I pack it and let it sit overnight, that way if there's a leak I find it in my living room instead of on the ground at 2am. A patch kit lives in my pack now no matter what, it weighs nothing and saves your whole night.
