My old tent finally gave out during a downpour in the Catskills, but my backup tarp setup saved the whole trip.

After the main pole snapped at 2 AM, I rigged a 10x12 tarp between two pines and stayed dry until morning, proving that a simple backup plan is sometimes the best piece of gear you own, so what's your go-to piece of gear that saved a trip when something major failed?

Glad your backup plan worked out.

Wait you had a 10x12 tarp just sitting in your pack as a backup? That's huge, man. I'm over here with a little emergency poncho and you're basically carrying a whole extra shelter. My pack would weigh a ton.

Right? I used to carry a huge tarp too! I had this giant blue one that took up half my pack. I finally switched to a smaller, lighter one after a trip where I was just miserable from the weight. It still works great for a quick shelter or to keep my gear dry. @the_jana, you should try a mid-size one, it's a game changer without being crazy heavy.

Sounds like you just got lucky with the weather.
