The night I learned my tent footprint was upside down after 4 years

I was setting up at Big Basin last month and this guy walks over and asks why my footprint is sticking out past the tent walls. I had no idea what he was talking about, but he showed me that the coated side goes down and it should be tucked under. All those rainy nights in Washington I thought I was waterproofing, I was just trapping water against the floor. Anyone else find out they've been using some basic gear wrong this whole time?
