The REI guy told me to skip the $300 tent and rent first, he was spot on
Tbh I almost ignored him because I had my heart set on this 4-season tent that was on clearance. He asked where I was actually going and I said the Smokies for 4 nights in October. He said dude you're gonna roast in that thing and you'll never use it again after this trip. So I rented a simple 2-person from the shop for $45 and it handled the cold way better than I expected. Meanwhile my buddy bought the fancy one and now it sits in his garage because it's too heavy to backpack with. The rental let me figure out what I actually needed, which was floor space and ventilation, not storm proofing. Has anyone else trusted a store employee against your gut and come out ahead?
