TIL a cheap tarp can ruin your whole trip in the rain

I used a $10 blue tarp from the hardware store for 2 years and thought it was fine until last month in the Smokies when water pooled and ripped through at 2am. Switched to a $40 sil-nylon tarp from a brand I'd never heard of and it shed a thunderstorm without a single drip. Anyone else find that spending a bit more on a tarp saved their gear more than any tent upgrade?

Silver tarps work fine if you set them up right and don't expect them to be bombproof.

Funny you mention that, I remember watching a guy in the Smokies try to patch his ripped tarp with duct tape in a downpour while his friend just held it over their heads for an hour. Kinda made me realize cheap tarps are a gamble not worth taking.

Oh man this hits home hard! It's funny how this same lesson shows up everywhere in life not just camping gear. I've noticed the same pattern with cheap rain jackets, budget tool sets, even off brand phone cables. You buy the cheap version thinking you're being smart with money but it ends up costing you more in the long run when it breaks at the worst possible moment. That $30 tarp rip taught me something bigger about paying for reliability over just the lowest price tag. Now I always ask myself "will I be cursing this purchase at 2am in the rain?" before I buy anything.
