Unpopular opinion: Those $40 collapsible water jugs are garbage

Bought two of those blue plastic collapsible water jugs for a 5 day trip to Yellowstone and both leaked by day 3. The spigot design is just too weak for any real pressure. Anyone know a solid 5 gallon jug that actually holds up?

What nobody seems to mention is that these jugs get absolutely disgusting after one use. The plastic is porous so it holds onto bacteria no matter how much you rinse it. I had one that started smelling like old socks even after I scrubbed it with soap. The rigid options like you mentioned are way easier to actually dry out between trips. Tossing that collapsible thing in a hot car just bakes the smell in deeper. I switched to a plain old military surplus jerry can and never looked back. It weighs a ton empty but zero leaks and zero smell. Plus you can actually boil water in it if things go sideways.

Yeah so I had basically the same problem with those blue collapsible ones, the spigot snapped off on day two of a trip to the Grand Canyon. What finally worked for me was a 5 gallon rigid container from Reliance, the one with the handles on both sides and a thick screw-top spigot. I think I paid like $25 at a camping store near Phoenix. That thing lasted me through three weeklong trips and never leaked once, even when I accidentally dropped it off my tailgate. It doesn't collapse flat but it stacks fine in the back of a car.

Man I can barely trust myself with a full jug, let alone a fragile spigot lol.
